Question: why is it that the americans insist on calling football “soccer”?
football is clearly and english game which was clearly invented first. The players use their feet for 99% of the game, and yet american football the ball hardly ever touches the players feet. and yet the english football is constantly referred to as “soccer. am i the only one who finds this annoying?

No, no it’s not. The majority isn’t always right, and the appeal to popularity is a logical fallacy.
The word “soccer comes from “aSOCiation football”, with the -er suffix.
Besides, it’s not like it’s an active attempt to “change” the word because we think we’re too good for you. Our language simply developed differently and has different words than your’s. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Do you accuse the French of being silly because they have a different word for it than Germans do? The same goes for British and American English, they’re two different things.
Question: My friends keep on calling Americans dumb because we call it ” soccer ” and not ” football “?
Basically my friends always call Americans dumb & annoying, because we like to call it ” soccer ” and not ” football ” and I never know what to say back to him, anyone can help give me a few points or arguments to defend myself? : D

I think you are right and people over here should get over it, we even have a popular football show called Soccer AM.

Where did we get “soccer” from? Why don’t us Americans call it football like the rest of the world? I mean, our “football” doesn’t even involve using your foot unless you’re kicking.
